BINCHANG, China, Dec. 13, 2024 — The world’s first 660 MW ultra-supercritical circulating fluidized bed (CFB) power generation unit, located in Binchang, China, has successfully completed a 168-hour full-load trial run, establishing a new global benchmark in power generation technology.

The No. 1 Generator Set of the Binchang Project in Shaanxi, China, has successfully completed a 168-hour trial operation.

The Binchang Project, a demonstration project supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Energy Administration, leads the coal industry in environmental remediation within the Yellow River Basin. It integrates the use of solid waste and mine water with mine site restoration and land reclamation.

This two-phase project, upon completion of the first phase, will annually process approximately 2 million tons of low-grade coal and inferior fuels like coal slime and gangue. It will also utilize 2 million tons of mine water and supply 6 million GJ of heat, meeting Binzhou City’s heating needs and local industrial steam requirements.

Furthermore, the project will bolster regional grid stability and electricity supply, addressing local power shortfalls and promoting sustained economic growth.

Harbin Electric Corporation provided the boiler, turbine, and generator – the project’s core components. Harbin Boiler Company’s advanced CFB boiler features ultra-low emissions, high parameters, and low energy consumption. This entirely domestically produced boiler, with its independent intellectual property, represents the peak of global CFB boiler technology in terms of parameters and capacity.

Harbin Turbine Company’s ultra-supercritical indirect air-cooled reverse-flow turbine is another key achievement. This 660 MW turbine uses a once-through reheat, single-axis, three-cylinder, two-exhaust design, excelling in thermal performance and flow efficiency.

Finally, the high-efficiency generator from Harbin Electric Machinery Company delivers high output, excellent efficiency, low temperature rise, and minimal vibration. Its design enables wide-load operation and robust performance under demanding conditions, including peak shaving, leading phase operation, and negative-sequence operation.

This ultra-supercritical CFB power generation technology is a significant accomplishment under China’s 13th Five-Year Plan. It advances high-parameter, large-capacity, and energy-efficient CFB technology, aligning with the nation’s modern energy development goals. This reflects Harbin Electric Corporation’s commitment to developing sustainable, low-carbon energy technologies and fostering innovation to address evolving energy challenges.

Harbin Electric Corporation leveraged resources from China’s 13th Five-Year Plan and partnered with leading Chinese universities, including Tsinghua, Xi’an Jiaotong, Zhejiang, and Chongqing.

By combining advanced technology and practical engineering, they overcame key challenges to develop ultra-high-parameter, ultra-large CFB boiler equipment, successfully scaling it to 660 MW. The boiler’s main steam pressure reaches 29.3 MPa, and with a main steam temperature of 605°C and a reheat steam temperature of 623°C, it sets new international standards for CFB boiler parameters. The boiler also achieves 95% desulfurization efficiency, enabling ultra-low emissions for large-scale CFB applications.

Harbin Electric Corporation’s dedication to excellence propelled the Binchang project from proposal to national demonstration project under the 13th Five-Year Plan. Each stage, from construction and testing to grid connection and commissioning, resulted in a world-class power generation facility with unparalleled parameters and performance. The successful operation of the 660 MW ultra-supercritical CFB boiler not only addresses a critical technology gap but also solidifies Harbin Electric Corporation’s leadership in large-capacity, high-parameter CFB technology. This achievement marks the beginning of a new era of ultra-supercritical parameters for CFB boilers globally.
