TORONTO, May 9, 2025 – A proposed class action lawsuit was filed in Toronto on May 6, 2025, against Ford Motor Company and Ford Motor Company of Canada Limited (“Ford”). The suit is on behalf of Canadian residents who purchased or leased Ford Escape or Lincoln Corsair Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) from the 2020 model year to the present. The Court File No. is CV-25-00742862-00CP.

The legal action alleges that class members paid a higher price for PHEVs with the expectation of saving money on fuel, reducing wear on their engines, and benefiting the environment. Plug-in electric vehicles are significantly more expensive than vehicles powered by internal combustion engines or standard hybrids.

The suit also alleges that around January 2025, Ford issued a notice to customers warning them that their electric batteries might be faulty. Customers were told to stop recharging the battery due to the risk of fires caused by the PHEVs’ high-voltage battery cells, even when the vehicles are not being driven.

According to the suit, Ford was unable to repair or replace the batteries at the time of the notice and remains unable to do so. This leaves owners unable to recharge their vehicles via plugging in, reducing the cars’ ability to run on electric power, increasing gas costs, and causing more wear on the combustion engine.
