JACKSON, Mich., May 5, 2025 — Consumers Energy is expanding its natural gas plant in Zeeland, with completion expected in mid-June, before the peak summer energy demand. This project reinforces the company’s dedication to providing dependable, cost-effective, and adaptable energy solutions to communities throughout Michigan. The expansion is a component of Consumers Energy’s broader initiative, which strategically modernizes infrastructure and strengthens grid resilience to meet Michigan’s future energy needs.
“The expansion of our Zeeland facility marks a significant advancement in our reliability efforts,” stated Norm Kapala, vice president of generation operations at Consumers Energy. “As electricity demand changes, we’re proactively working to guarantee our customers receive consistent energy, especially as our communities continue to expand.”
The Zeeland plant expansion will enhance the highly efficient natural gas plant’s generation capacity by installing new technology to improve both performance and flexibility. This includes an Advanced Gas Path (AGP) system to increase power output and fuel efficiency, along with an Advanced Fuel System (AFS) for improved fuel mixture control. These upgrades will enable the turbines to produce more electricity and respond more quickly to changes in demand, while remaining within established annual emission limits. Customers will benefit from an additional 50 megawatts and a 2.5% improvement in fuel efficiency.
Kapala added, “This investment is not only about power generation but also about securing Michigan’s future. We are developing a more robust and intelligent energy grid that safeguards our communities and promotes the state’s economic development.”
Consumers Energy prioritizes meeting the electricity needs of its customers. Significant investments have been made in infrastructure to ensure reliable energy delivery through dependable, on-demand electricity. This includes maintaining the Jackson Generating Station, expanding gas-fired facilities like the recent purchase of the Covert Generating Station, and adding generating capacity at the Zeeland Generating Station. The company will also continue operating the Karn 3 and 4 combined cycle units.
Consumers Energy is the largest energy provider in Michigan, delivering natural gas and/or electricity to 6.8 million of the state’s 10 million residents across all 68 Lower Peninsula counties. Consumers Energy recognizes that its primary duty is to ensure uninterrupted power for its customers and is dedicated to offering reliable, flexible, and affordable energy around the clock.
