10,000 Nurses Protest Employer Actions, Launch Contract Campaign
DETROIT, June 21, 2025 — Teamsters Local 2024 members at Corewell Health East, joined by Teamsters General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, state and local officials, and fellow union members, rallied today to demand an end to what they see as employer attacks on unionized employees.
Zuckerman stated that Corewell management has a history of disrespect toward employees, which they are allegedly continuing now that the workers have joined the Teamsters. He warned Corewell to prepare for a significant battle.
After a $1.7 million anti-union campaign in November 2024, Corewell nurses voted overwhelmingly to join the Teamsters. Since then, Corewell Health East management has reportedly retaliated against nurses by denying them economic benefits offered to nonunion staff, such as wage increases, bonuses, and 403(b) matching contributions.
Alyson Zajac, a nurse at Corewell Health East in Dearborn, said that these perceived attacks from their employer are only strengthening the resolve of nurses who feel angry, exhausted, and overworked.
The Teamsters will begin negotiating with Corewell Health East next week for the first collective bargaining agreement covering nearly 10,000 nurses.
