LITTLETON, Colo., Sept. 20, 2024 — The FCC has approved EchoStar’s framework for building out its 5G network, a move that aims to boost competition in the wireless market. This updated framework allows EchoStar to enhance its coast-to-coast 5G network for Boost Mobile, the first cloud-native Open RAN network in the world. This allows for more efficient deployment of the network in new areas. The FCC’s action recognizes the benefits of EchoStar’s continued presence in the wireless market, which include lower pricing and greater innovation, resulting in a win for American consumers.
Key benefits of the FCC’s new framework include:
- Enhanced Network Build. By the end of the year, EchoStar’s Boost Mobile Network will cover 80% of the U.S. population, expanding coverage to an additional 30 million Americans. EchoStar will also expedite its network buildout in more than 500 license areas. Consumers in areas where EchoStar hasn’t yet deployed its network can still access Boost Mobile’s coverage through EchoStar’s wholesale partnerships with AT&T and T-Mobile.
- Low-Cost Offering. EchoStar will provide nationwide access to a low-cost wireless plan and 5G device, regardless of whether consumers are in an area where EchoStar’s Boost Mobile Network is deployed or reliant on roaming partners for service.
- More Efficient Build. The FCC’s targeted extensions align EchoStar’s deployment with its 3.45 GHz spectrum licenses, reducing the need to install infrastructure twice at each cell site/tower. This allows small wireless carriers and Tribal nations to lease EchoStar’s spectrum licenses in extension areas where the company hasn’t yet deployed its network.
EchoStar is proud of its progress in deploying a cloud-native Open RAN network that supports 21st century advancements, including artificial intelligence. The FCC’s framework enables EchoStar to continue this work efficiently and effectively.
EchoStar’s full filing is available and the grant is reflected in the FCC’s Universal Licensing System (ULS).
