(SeaPRwire) – LONDON, April 1, 2026 — Moving abroad is often viewed as a brand new start, and since expats account for 14.1% of the EU population, the allure of building a life in a new country stays strong.
Yet the experience is hardly ever smooth. Research from digital insurance platform Feather shows that many expats face a mix of immediate emotional and practical pressure, ranging from administrative overwhelm (60%) and unexpected living expenses (27%) to fear of isolation (21%) and concerns over healthcare (11%).
Nearly one third (31%) of respondents said they did not know about these emotional and practical challenges before relocating. Another 33% reported experiencing a “relocation honeymoon phase”, where they put off life administrative work amid the excitement of the first few weeks, only for stress to build up later.
Feather’s Relocation Reality Check analyzes the pressure points expats face in their first year abroad, including when stress peaks, what commonly triggers it, and what helps people start feeling settled.
The biggest stressors were adjusting to a new job and managing income (39), finding accommodation (31%), language barriers (27%), unexpected cost of living changes (27%) and navigating local bureaucracy (21%).
Looking broadly, the findings indicate the emotional impact of relocation is often underestimated. More than half of expats (54%) said the emotional stress of moving abroad was heavier than they expected.
Even so, the long-term outlook is much more positive. Seven out of 10 respondents said the move ultimately improved their quality of life, while 32% said it boosted their personal confidence.
Rob Schumacher, CEO and co-founder of Feather, commented:
“At Feather, we see every day that moving abroad is about far more than just paperwork. It is both an emotional journey and a practical transition. Our goal is to make this shift easier by removing stress around things like insurance, and giving expats the confidence to focus on building their new life.
That is why we let our customers explore, compare, and sign up for policies in minutes, online, and in a language they understand. Through the Relocation Reality Check, Feather hopes to highlight the true emotional reality of relocating, helping expats feel seen, understood, and better supported across the whole journey. Because moving abroad is not just about paperwork and packing boxes, it is about building a new life.”
