WASHINGTON, Oct. 3, 2024 — The International Copper Association (ICA) Board of Directors has appointed Stephen Rowland of Glencore as its new Chairman.

The International Copper Association (ICA) is the organization that promotes copper, protects its markets, and defends and sustains its demand.

Rowland succeeds Shehzad Bharmal, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Teck Resources, who held the position for the past two years.

Glencore, a long-standing and active ICA member since 2013, joins the association as it launches a new strategic plan to position itself as the voice of copper, advocating for its use and applications on behalf of its members. This plan includes developing and implementing a comprehensive sustainability product positioning strategy, encompassing aspects such as carbon footprint, responsible production, and circularity. ICA’s exclusive market intelligence and scientific research protect copper markets, defend and sustain demand, ensuring copper remains the material of choice for a sustainable future.

Glencore, a leading global copper producer, operates across every stage of the copper lifecycle, from mining, smelting, and refining to recycling copper scrap. As part of its mission to responsibly source commodities that advance everyday life, Glencore supplies the copper needed to develop, sustain, and improve the world. Glencore is taking steps to achieve its ambition of net-zero industrial emissions by 2050. In alignment with ICA’s strategic goals, Glencore will continue to collaborate closely with ICA to advance modern and responsible production practices. The ICA welcomes Stephen Rowland’s leadership of the Board in pursuit of their shared ambitions.

“Copper is a critical building block for our future. We need to ensure that we are providing this essential metal to the world in a sustainable and responsible manner, enabling a more circular economy and the clean energy transition. As the voice of copper, ICA is a vital organization for our industry, supporting members’ goals for modern production, achieving an impact that no company could achieve alone. I am excited to help lead ICA for the next two years,” Stephen Rowland, Glencore.

ICA President and CEO, Juan Ignacio Diaz, stated, “I am grateful to Steve Rowland for accepting this important leadership role, and I look forward to working closely with him as we implement a new strategic plan. ICA is proud to empower its members in bringing this essential material to the world to enable the future of human development. We need to produce not only more copper but better copper. From climate change and globalization to digitalization, copper is the solution for the megatrends we face today. The future runs on copper.”
