A new study reveals that home cannabis cultivation is more prevalent and diverse than previously thought, with a strong emphasis on community support.
MODESTO, Calif., Nov. 19, 2024 — The image of clandestine home cannabis cultivation is outdated. With 24 states and the District of Columbia now permitting home growing (with limitations), many Americans are openly cultivating. A significant 66% of home growers report increased confidence and empowerment due to the evolving legal landscape.
This data originates from a national survey of almost one thousand self-identified home growers, commissioned by Stripe Theory for , a major community-focused cannabis seed bank and educational resource.
While home cultivation is increasing, support for beginners lags. This has led many to rely on peer networks for guidance. A substantial 48% of respondents cited the home growing community as crucial for learning and belonging.
Key survey findings illustrate a changing profile of home growers who are stepping into the open:
The Face of Home Growing is Evolving
A striking 61% of survey respondents were women, aligning with broader trends of increased female cannabis consumption. NIDA data indicates women aged 19-30 surpassed men in cannabis use in 2023.
Cultivation Fosters Self-Reliance
- 57% of respondents felt home growing empowered them to manage their health and wellness.
- 38% found cultivation instilled self-sufficiency and control.
- 35% grew at home to control cannabis strain and quality.
Home Growing: A Holistic Approach to Wellbeing
Beyond medicinal use, the cultivation process itself offers therapeutic benefits. 41% of respondents described it as a stress-relieving activity, highlighting its role in self-care.
Debunking the Difficulty Myth
Contrary to common belief, home growing is achievable. 44% of respondents believe the biggest misconception is the perceived difficulty. Their most frequent challenges involved managing male plants from regular seeds (32%), unexpected growth patterns (24%), and germination issues (23%).
Additional Key Findings:
- 60% strongly connect with cannabis community and culture.
- 59% actively experiment to improve yields.
- 51% favor outdoor cultivation.
- 46% anticipate organic and regenerative practices becoming mainstream within five years.
- 25% attribute reduced stigma to more favorable regulations.
