
VANCOUVER, BC, March 7, 2025 – Ironworkers Local 97 is advocating for the termination of Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) program to prioritize domestic employment and bolster the Canadian workforce, citing economic pressures from new U.S. tariffs and ongoing trade uncertainties with the Trump administration.
Doug Parton, the Business Manager and FS/T of Local 97 Ironworkers, representing over 2300 workers, released a firm statement today, underscoring the necessity of protecting and supporting Canadian workers in light of these economic challenges.
Parton stated, “Given the impending tariffs and trade conflicts impacting our economy, it is now more crucial than ever to prioritize Canadian workers. The Temporary Foreign Worker Program was intended to address labor market shortages, but in the current climate, we must guarantee that every available position is offered to qualified Canadians before seeking external labor.”
Local 97 has consistently championed equitable wages, robust labor protections, and job security for skilled tradespeople throughout British Columbia. However, the TFW program’s present framework compromises worker safety and fairness, posing risks to both TFWs and Canadian workers. A temporary suspension of the program for the construction sector is essential to allow for a comprehensive assessment and the strengthening of standards to ensure a secure and sustainable workforce.
Parton added, “Our Federal Government must act swiftly to address the program’s misuse and invest in training and apprenticeship schemes that prioritize Canadian workers. We stand ready to collaborate with policymakers to enact reforms that bolster our skilled trades sector while upholding fair wages and safety for all workers.”
