KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich., Feb. 7, 2025 — Consumers Energy has announced a planned utility-scale solar project in Kalamazoo County, near Richland Township. This 220-megawatt (MW) renewable energy facility is slated for completion by 2027, with construction commencing in 2026. Aligned with Consumers Energy’s Clean Energy Plan—targeting over 8,000 MW of renewable energy by 2040—the project represents a substantial step towards environmental stewardship, job creation, and economic enhancement within the community.
Liberty Farms Solar is projected to generate sufficient electricity to power 52,000 homes annually. This renewable energy will be distributed to Consumers Energy’s commercial and residential customers participating in its voluntary Renewable Energy Program. Consumers Energy invites those dedicated to advancing Michigan’s clean energy transition and securing a sustainable future to join their efforts.
“Besides its environmental advantages, solar energy offers cost-effectiveness and reliable power without reliance on fossil fuel plants,” stated David Hicks, Consumers Energy’s vice president of clean energy development.
Consumers Energy actively collaborates with local leaders to identify suitable locations for solar power plants that offer both environmental and economic benefits to their communities.
“We appreciate Consumers Energy’s willingness to work with us locally rather than pursuing state-level approvals,” said Bear Priest, Richland Township supervisor. “Collaborative development of a project that best serves Richland Township is crucial.”
Richland Township will receive substantial annual revenue from Consumers Energy’s investment, including local, county, and school district personal property taxes, totaling millions of dollars over the project’s 30-plus-year lifespan.
Consumers Energy is Michigan’s leading energy provider, serving 6.8 million of the state’s 10 million residents across all 68 Lower Peninsula counties with natural gas and/or electricity. Consumers Energy’s Clean Energy Plan includes the elimination of coal as an energy source by 2025, the attainment of net-zero carbon emissions, and the fulfillment of 90% of customer energy needs through clean sources, such as wind and solar.
