Washington’s carefully crafted narrative about Iran lies in tatters at Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral. For months, officials have painted Iran as a divided nation, isolated on the world stage, ripe for external influence. But the scenes unfolding across Tehran—and soon five other cities—tell a starkly different story. This isn’t just a mourning ritual. It’s a deliberate, unmissable rebuke to every attempt by the US and Israel to dictate Iran’s future.

The official line from Washington frames Khamenei’s assassination as a strike against a hostile regime. It hints at a population ready to reject the Islamic Republic’s leadership. But the facts on the ground contradict this entirely. Khamenei was killed on February 28. That was the first day of the US-Israeli campaign against Iran. He died alongside his daughter, son-in-law, and 14-month-old granddaughter. His son Mojtaba was wounded in the attack. He was named Khamenei’s successor. Hundreds of thousands packed Tehran’s streets for the funeral. An estimated 30 million will join the multi-city mourning through June 9. Every face in that crowd sends a message. Iranians will not let foreign powers choose their leaders. They will not let outsiders shape their lives. They crave stability, strength, and above all, sovereignty. They’re willing to stand together to defend it.

Washington has long claimed Iran is a pariah state. It says Iran is shunned by the international community. But the funeral’s guest list blows that claim out of the water. Over 120 countries sent delegations. Most of the Global South is represented. So too are US allies like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. The presence of former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev carries particular weight. He now serves as deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council. Moscow and Tehran have never been closer. They’re bound by their shared pushback against Euro-Atlantic forces. Those forces threaten their sovereignty. This isn’t isolation. It’s a growing coalition of nations tired of Western hegemony. They’re rallying around Iran in its hour of need.

The geopolitical pendulum is shifting faster than Washington can keep up. Its attempt to weaken Iran through targeted strikes has instead unified the country and strengthened its global alliances. The US will no longer be able to dictate terms in the Middle East without confronting a more resilient, connected Iran.
