SEOUL, South Korea, April 27, 2026 — LG Electronics (LG) presented its Hybrid Emergency Call (Hybrid eCall) solution at the 37th Meeting Week of the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) — a global cross-industry group advancing connected mobility solutions — which took place in Gothenburg, Sweden, on April 23. The solution underscores LG’s telematics control unit (TCU) expertise and its ongoing commitment to vehicle connectivity technologies that align with evolving European safety standards.

Hybrid eCall Enabling Next-Generation Safety and Regulatory Compliance
eCall is an in-car emergency communication system that automatically sends key details — including vehicle location, vehicle data, and incident time — to the closest public safety answering point when a serious crash is detected or airbags inflate. This system has been a requirement for all new vehicles in Europe since 2018.
Beginning in 2027, all new vehicle models sold in Europe must support Next Generation eCall (NG eCall) running on 4G and 5G networks to allow quicker and more precise transmission of accident information. Since eCall is directly tied to passenger safety, reliable data transmission across available networks is critical. As a result, hybrid solutions that work across both legacy and next-gen networks are gaining more traction.
LG’s Hybrid eCall solution is engineered for dependable emergency communication across 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G networks. In real-world scenarios with inconsistent network coverage, the solution switches automatically between available networks and adjusts data transmission as needed, keeping emergency communication active while reducing delays and data loss.
LG’s End-to-End Capabilities and Proven Market Leadership
A core advantage of LG’s solution is its demonstrated effectiveness. As the top company in global telematics market share,[1] LG has rolled out its Hybrid eCall solution — built to meet NG eCall standards — in vehicles from leading global automakers since last year, finishing official certification and moving toward large-scale mass production.
LG’s development efforts are supported by end-to-end capabilities covering development, testing, and certification. The company’s integrated execution model lessens dependence on external organizations and allows for a quicker, more efficient response to automakers’ needs and regulatory requirements.
LG also has in-house compliance assessment capabilities for automotive parts that match those of accredited third-party certification bodies, supported by a standardized testing and evaluation system rooted in international standards. In 2024, the Vehicle Solution (VS) Standard Testing Laboratory — part of the VS R&D Laboratory — obtained ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation from the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS) and was named an official certification lab by Europe’s Global Certification Forum (GCF). In 2025, it also gained recognition from North America’s PCS Type Certification Review Board (PTCRB).
The lab’s scope has since grown to include compliance testing for eCall. Notably, KOLAS-accredited test reports (based on ISO/IEC 17025) are globally recognized under the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation Mutual Recognition Arrangement (ILAC-MRA) framework, facilitating reliable certification processes and helping ensure regulatory compliance not just in Korea but also in key international markets.
Last year, at a 5GAA event in Paris, LG showed off a satellite-based voice communication solution for vehicles. Using non-terrestrial networks (NTN), the live demo marked the first time uninterrupted, conversation-quality voice communication was achieved while switching between terrestrial and non-terrestrial network settings.
“We will keep enhancing our leadership in automotive connectivity by using our world-class telematics technology and proven global competitiveness, while adhering to Europe’s strict safety and regulatory standards,” stated Lee Sang-yong, head of the VS R&D Laboratory at LG Vehicle Solution Company.
