OTTAWA, ON, December 20, 2024 – Minister of Indigenous Services, Patty Hajdu, released the following statement:

“Since 2016, approximately $8.8 billion has been allocated for Jordan’s Principle to address the health, social, and educational needs of First Nations children, acknowledging their unique circumstances.

Over 8.2 million services and supports have been approved under Jordan’s Principle since 2016. We’ve enhanced operations to manage the increasing demand and are refining our processes to ensure consistency and clarity regarding required documentation and accessible services.

On November 21, 2024, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT) issued a summary ruling on a non-compliance motion and cross-motion concerning Jordan’s Principle implementation.

We responded to the Tribunal on December 10, 2024, expressing our readiness for Tribunal-mediated discussions. However, due to significant legal concerns regarding aspects of the summary ruling, we filed an application for judicial review of the Tribunal’s decision with the Federal Court on December 20, 2024, while simultaneously requesting a temporary suspension pending the Tribunal’s full reasons.

Our commitment to Jordan’s Principle implementation remains steadfast. Parents, guardians, and communities are encouraged to continue submitting requests for First Nations children.

This crucial work will continue to ensure equitable access to essential public services for First Nations children.”
