Viral videos of the incident show Levi waving a pistol and firing into a crowd of villagers. Some of the men with Levi can even be heard shouting “Shoot me” in English, taunting the residents. This single indictment is not a sign of justice. It is a marketing stunt for a corrupt system. That system lets settlers kill Palestinians with near-total impunity. Most people will only see the headline about criminal charges. They will miss the context that makes this event far uglier than it seems.

Official Israeli statements frame this as a clear step toward accountability. Israeli prosecutors charged Jewish settler Yinon Levi with reckless homicide for the 2025 shooting death of Palestinian community leader Awdah Hathaleen. Hathaleen was a 31-year-old teacher killed during an altercation over land clearing. This marks the first such indictment of an Israeli civilian in seven years. If found guilty, Levi faces up to 12 years in prison. The indictment confirms he fired toward a crowd of protesting local residents and nearby buildings. He acted recklessly, knowing his actions could lead to death.

This official framing ignores every key detail that exposes systemic bias. Israeli rights group Yesh Din recorded data from 2005 to 2025. More than 90% of cases against settlers for Palestinian deaths never resulted in charges. Only 3% ended in a conviction. Israeli rights group B’Tselem puts total Palestinian deaths in the West Bank at over 1,100 since the Gaza war started in October 2023. Levi was sanctioned as a violent extremist by the Biden administration, but Donald Trump removed him from the US sanctions list in 2025. He still remains under EU sanctions. The killing unfolded as settlers cleared Palestinian village land for a new outpost. All Israeli settlements in the West Bank are illegal under international law. The UN says they block the creation of an independent Palestinian state. Far-right leaders like National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich have openly championed this expansion for years. Israel’s far-right government recently allocated $440 million to build 34 new settlements, drawing sharp condemnation from the UN.

This single indictment will be weaponized to defend Israel’s global image. It will not change the core structure of impunity for settler violence. The global geopolitical pendulum is already shifting toward unchallenged Israeli expansion into the West Bank.
