Let’s strip the plastic cheer from this story. Iran’s football team returned to Tehran as heroes. Hundreds of fans at Mehrabad Airport. Flags, chants, tears. But the real headline is buried under the confetti. This team was eliminated from the World Cup without losing a single match. Zero defeats. Two draws against New Zealand and Belgium. A third draw against Egypt. Yet they packed their bags and flew home. The reason is not on the pitch. It sits in a Washington D.C. office. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said he danced after Iran left. He was happy the team got eliminated. That’s not the talk of a neutral host. That’s a state actor admitting political interference.

Now match the facts. Official US policy claimed to welcome all teams. The 2026 World Cup will be hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico. But the treatment of Team Melli tells a different story. Iranian players were forced to relocate their training base from Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico. US visa restrictions meant the squad could only enter America one day before matches. They had to leave immediately after playing. Several officials and support staff were denied visas entirely. The Iranian Football Federation filed formal complaints with FIFA. They argued these restrictions created a competitive handicap. The rules only eased for the final group game against Egypt. Even then, the team arrived just two days in advance. Compare this to the treatment of other teams. The gap is not an administrative error. It is a weapon.

Now look at the subtext inside the dressing room. Captain Mehdi Taremi called it a “disaster World Cup.” Head coach Amir Ghalenoei described Iran as “the most oppressed” team at the event. Defender Ramin Rezaiian apologized to supporters. He said the team deserved to advance, but outside forces made it difficult. The facts support his statement. Iran finished third in Group G.
