  • Fully autonomous truck on display, set for agile mining and right-sizing
  • Focus on payload efficiency, proven by 12,000 operational mining trucks
  • Scania is taking orders for autonomous trucks that will be delivered in late 2026 and which will pave the way for a step-change in agile mining.

STOCKHOLM, Sept. 20, 2024 — At this year’s MINExpo in Las Vegas, Scania is showcasing its “Think big, act small” approach, which is helping mining companies become more agile, efficient, and sustainable. The Swedish manufacturer offers not only the industry’s most efficient combustion engines but also electric and autonomous truck solutions. Scania is known for its focus on cost and operational uptime, a philosophy ingrained in the company’s 100-year history and translated into payload efficiency for the mining industry.

“Our ‘Think big, act small’ approach has resonated deeply with our customers,” says Tobias Ekstedt, Director and Head of Scania Mining. “They recognize how it addresses their challenges and how we at Scania, with our payload-efficient, truck-based solutions, are providing a sustainable path to the future for them.”

Scania’s booth at the MINExpo fair (West hall, 10751) features a R 620 10×4 mining truck fully equipped with a sensor system for autonomous operation. This display embodies the core principles of Scania’s mining offerings: industry-leading payload efficiency, faster cycle times, low emissions, high safety standards, and ultimately, lower cost per transported tonne compared to alternatives.

“The global mining industry is undergoing a transformation, similar to many other sectors,” says Ekstedt. “Our solutions in autonomy and electrification are poised for a breakthrough in agile mining. Until that fully materializes, we also offer the industry’s most sustainable and efficient solutions: the autonomous truck we have on display at MINExpo perfectly illustrates our capabilities.”

Scania’s background as a leading provider of transport solutions and as part of the TRATON Group forms the foundation of its customer-centric offerings. Its vast resources support its strong presence (around 12,000 Scania mining trucks are currently operational) and its significance to the mining industry.

“Success in the mining industry requires certain capabilities from suppliers like us,” says Ekstedt. “But be assured that with our extensive experience and dedication to R&D, we are providing exactly what the industry needs. We prioritize the fundamentals and go beyond by offering sustainability and cutting-edge technology in autonomy and electrification to enhance payload efficiency per head.”
