SHARJAH, UAE, Jan. 19, 2026 — The Emirate of Sharjah in the UAE has reached a new global milestone by attaining “Advanced Affiliate” membership in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities. This marks Sharjah as the first Arab city to achieve this esteemed status.

This accomplishment highlights the emirate’s profound dedication to improving the well-being of its elderly residents and cultivating an inclusive, supportive environment for all age brackets. It is in line with Sharjah’s vision of constructing a cohesive society centered on human welfare.

Sharjah’s progression from basic to Advanced Affiliate status acknowledges its innovative models in implementing WHO standards. As a result, the city is now recognized as a reference point and an official source of expertise and consultation for other nations developing age-friendly programs. Sharjah has already offered technical support and exchanged best practices with regional neighbors such as Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, solidifying its position as a regional leader in social policies supporting senior citizens.

As per Maryam Majid Al Shamsi, Director of the Sharjah Social Services Department, this new WHO status mirrors the emirate’s humanitarian vision under His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, which places human welfare at the forefront. She emphasized that Sharjah has carried out comprehensive initiatives for decades, allowing senior citizens to live with dignity and engage actively.

Asma Al Khudari, Director of the Sharjah Age-Friendly City Office, stated that joining the global network in 2016 allowed Sharjah to develop integrated action plans and distinctive initiatives. The Advanced Affiliate status signifies a higher level of compliance with international standards, promoting broader participation in global forums, enhancing international recognition, and strengthening strategic partnerships with international organizations.
