BEIJING, Sept. 2, 2024 — The 2024 China (Shenyang) Rowing Development Index was unveiled recently in Shenyang City, northeast China’s Liaoning Province, demonstrating the dynamic growth of the integrated development of rowing and cities.
The index, developed in collaboration by China Economic Information Service (CEIS) and the Shenyang Municipal People’s Government, focuses on examining Shenyang’s rowing progress. It analyzes the development trajectory and industry characteristics of rowing in Shenyang through three key areas: event allure, industrial expansion, and sports-city integration. It also conducts specialized research, using the growth of international rowing sports as a benchmark.
This year’s index marks the third installment of the China (Shenyang) Rowing Development Index, following the two versions released in 2022 and 2023. The launch of the 2024 index represents a significant step forward for Shenyang in its pursuit of becoming a recognized city with robust sports competitiveness.
The 2024 index highlights that Shenyang’s rowing events have achieved increasing industrial and international influence, with the two core indicators measuring the number of racing teams and athletes leading nationally. Since its initiation in 2018, the Shenyang International Open Regatta has become one of the most impactful signature events, integrating culture, sports, and tourism, and boasting the largest participation in China.
As a rowing training and competition hub, the Hunhe River, flowing through southern Shenyang, has witnessed the thriving of sports training, leisure culture, catering services, unique experiences, cultural tourism, and other business formats. The index reveals that 390 rowing-themed cultural events were held in Shenyang in 2023, driving the revenue of rowing-related tourist attractions to surpass 10 million yuan (approximately 1.41 million U.S. dollars).
Shenyang has been intensifying its efforts to promote rowing on college campuses. The number of rowing training activities on campuses in Shenyang increased by 20 percent year-over-year in 2023. Currently, 41 primary and secondary schools in the city offer rowing courses.
