ALGIERS, Algeria, Dec. 31, 2024 — Sinopec (HKG: 0386) unveiled its inaugural sustainability report, Sustainability Report on Serving the Construction of the Belt and Road – Sinopec in Algeria, on December 27 in Algiers. This marks the first such report from a Chinese firm in Algeria, showcasing Sinopec’s contributions to economic growth, safety, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility in the region, aligning with the vision of a New Algeria.
Algeria, Africa’s largest nation and fourth-largest economy, is the setting for Sinopec’s commitment to open collaboration and mutually beneficial partnerships. The company aims to foster sustainable cooperation that benefits the Algerian people by integrating oil and gas exploration with environmental protection and social progress.
Sinopec’s Algerian operations center on oil exploration and development, petroleum and chemical engineering, and refining. A new agreement with SONATRACH, Algeria’s national oil and gas company, on the Zarzaitine oilfield strengthens this partnership. Sinopec maintains a strong focus on high-quality engineering and exceptional service delivery. Its desert water pipeline project, providing potable water to 50,000 Tamanrasset residents, received an outstanding contribution award for Sino-Algerian cooperation.
Sinopec strictly adheres to Algerian safety and environmental regulations, continuously enhancing safety management, strengthening environmental controls, implementing green building practices, and protecting biodiversity. At the Zarzaitine oilfield, a dedicated electrical safety committee conducted 42 HSE inspections, and the company invested 3.12 million dollars in safety and environmental initiatives. Sinopec also supports various community projects, including tree planting and waste cleanup.
Sinopec prioritizes local workforce development, providing nearly 1,000 jobs at the Zarzaitine oilfield, along with career advancement opportunities. The company actively engages in community support through initiatives such as repairing desert wells to provide clean water, hosting cultural events, establishing the “China Bookshelf” project for cultural exchange, donating medical supplies, and providing school supplies—actions widely appreciated by the local community.
