(SeaPRwire) –   PASAY CITY, Philippines, May 25, 2026 — SM Investments Corporation (SM Investments), the parent entity of the SM Group, announced that the Group boosted its renewable energy procurement to 31% of its total electricity usage in 2025—an increase from 27% in 2024—as it continued to expand the use of cleaner energy across all its business segments.

Over the course of the year, the Group procured roughly 730 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity from renewable sources.

This transition to renewable electricity resulted in the avoidance of 370,644.07 metric tons of carbon emissions—equal to removing approximately 296,954 electric passenger cars from the roads for a full year.

“Investing in renewable energy is both a sustainability choice and a business strategy for us,” stated Frederic C. DyBuncio, President and Chief Executive Officer of SM Investments. “It allows us to control long-term energy expenses, enhance operational efficiency, and build more robust businesses that can better serve our customers, tenants, communities, and other stakeholders.”

Spearheading the Group’s comprehensive renewable energy strategy is the Philippine Geothermal Production Company (PGPC), a fully owned subsidiary of SM Investments. PGPC currently runs the Mak-Ban and Tiwi steam fields in Batangas, Laguna, and Albay provinces, providing geothermal steam capable of generating up to 400 megawatts of clean renewable energy to power homes, offices, and industrial facilities 24/7.

PGPC is also developing new geothermal sites across six locations in Luzon, which could add up to 400 more megawatts of clean, renewable geothermal power to the nation’s grid.

The Mak-Ban and Tiwi steam fields in Laguna and Albay by themselves can produce sufficient geothermal steam to supply electricity to up to one million households each year.

“Reliable and affordable energy is crucial not just for businesses but also for communities and the wider economy,” DyBuncio added. “We are convinced that renewable energy—especially geothermal—can help bolster long-term energy security while driving economic growth.”

Renewable energy adoption is continuing to grow across the Group’s integrated developments. SM Prime Holdings, Inc. has installed over 200,000 solar panels across 69 properties as part of its wider energy efficiency efforts.

The Group’s shift toward renewable energy is also becoming more evident across its larger business ecosystem.

Alfamart recently installed solar panels at its Saraiya Distribution Center in Quezon Province, which has a peak solar capacity of 120.28 kilowatt-peak (kWp), aiding in enhancing operational efficiency within its supply chain network.

At the same time, the Group’s banking subsidiaries are continuing to back sustainable financing initiatives. As of the end of 2025, BDO Unibank, Inc. has provided funding totaling PHP 1.21 trillion for sustainable projects, including 71 renewable energy developments worth PHP 177 billion. China Banking Corporation, for its part, disbursed PHP 72 billion in financing for energy access, renewable energy, and energy efficiency projects in 2025.

SM Investments noted that the Group is continuing to integrate sustainability and operational efficiency across its retail, property, banking, and portfolio investment sectors.
