PARIS, June 16, 2025 — Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) announced today that Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) is implementing SmartRunway and SmartLanding software across its entire Boeing 737 fleet to improve runway safety. The Honeywell Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS), which is already installed on Southwest aircraft, enables this feature, and it has already been activated on over 700 aircraft.

SmartRunway and SmartLanding enhance flight crew situational awareness during taxi, takeoff, and landing by providing audible and visual alerts and encouraging stabilized approaches. It proactively warns pilots if they are moving too quickly, flying too high, or heading for the wrong runway, assisting in preventing the sequence of events that can result in runway accidents. SmartRunway and SmartLanding is approved for the majority of Airbus and Boeing aircraft, as well as a variety of business aviation platforms.

“Pilots today encounter growing challenges, such as unpredictable weather and heavy traffic in confined airspace, which require them to make quick judgments during takeoff and landing. Fortunately, as the challenges change, so does the technology that delivers the information they need in real time,” said Jim Currier, president and CEO of Honeywell Aerospace Technologies. “Southwest continues to prioritize the safety of its pilots and passengers by investing in SmartRunway and SmartLanding software for its fleet.”

Honeywell’s next-generation runway safety technology, Surface Alerts (SURF-A), is currently being tested and is expected to be certified for commercial air transport aircraft in 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. It is a pioneering cockpit alerting software that uses GPS data, Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast equipment, and sophisticated analytics to give pilots immediate audio and visual warnings of potential runway traffic. SURF-A, like SmartRunway and SmartLanding, is enabled by Honeywell’s EGPWS.

This agreement strengthens Honeywell’s long-standing relationship with Southwest, the world’s largest 737 platform operator. In 2015, Southwest chose Honeywell flight-deck systems for its 240-unit order of 737 MAX aircraft, adding to its existing fleet of 737 Next Generation models equipped with Honeywell cockpit avionics. Southwest was also the first airline to integrate Honeywell’s Integrated Multi-Mode Receiver technology into its fleet.

“Safety is paramount at Southwest,” said Andrew Watterson, chief operating officer at Southwest Airlines. “Honeywell’s SmartRunway and SmartLanding software will give our pilots better awareness of their surroundings, ensuring the highest level of safety when operating on runways across the network.”
