Computers for Success Canada Hosts Exclusive VIP Reception in St. John’s to Address Canada’s Digital Divide
ST. JOHN’S, NL, Oct. 3, 2024 – Building on the success of the first roundtable held on June 13, the National Network for Digital Inclusion developed by Computers for Excellence Canada (CFSC) hosted its second Roundtable on October 2, 2024 at 3:00 PM, at The Rooms, St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. This event was held in a hybrid format, allowing for both in-person and online participation.
This gathering brought together experts, institutions, and government representatives from across Canada to discuss initiatives aimed at bridging the digital divide. The inaugural meeting, held last June, had involved participants from Montreal, the University of Sherbrooke in Longueuil, and the Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) office in Ottawa. The productive exchanges laid the groundwork for this second meeting.
The October 2 roundtable drew 100 participants and focused on developing a national roadmap and implementing a comprehensive digital inclusion strategy. It presented a unique opportunity for collaboration on concrete projects and exchange of ideas to advance digital inclusion across Canada.
The event highlighted the efforts of CFSC and its partners to bridge the digital divide that disproportionately affects low-income families in Canada. Through these initiatives, essential technology has been provided to schools, non-profit organizations, and families, fostering academic and professional success on a national scale.
The event featured an exclusive announcement regarding the upcoming partnership between the Canada Games and Computers for Schools Newfoundland for the 2025 Games.
Following the announcement, Econext and Computers for Schools Newfoundland showcased the results of their recent collection of electronic devices, aimed at supporting students and reducing electronic waste. Key donors were acknowledged during a certificate presentation.
A presentation of the public service announcement (PSA) developed by the Ray agency in collaboration with CFSC highlighted the inequalities created by the digital divide, particularly for Canadians who lack essential access to screens.
Concluding the presentations, a VIP cocktail was offered to the participants. This convivial gathering provided an opportunity to strengthen connections between the attendees and express gratitude to those who have contributed to the mission of the National Digital Inclusion Network.
