AUSTIN, Texas, May 23, 2025 — As the Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of grilling season in Texas, the Propane Council of Texas (ProCOT) encourages Texans to ensure their propane grills are in good working order and to review important grilling practices.
How often do you perform seasonal maintenance on your grill? Do you have enough propane for your holiday grilling? Are your connections secure, and is your grill free from debris?
“These may seem like minor points, but they ensure a simple, smooth, and enjoyable grilling experience,” stated Bill Van Hoy, Executive Director of ProCOT. “Texans appreciate propane grills for their convenience, speed, and temperature control. A quick check prepares you for grilling.”
ProCOT advises starting with a basic inspection of your propane tank. Check for rust, dents, cracks, or any signs of damage, and replace the tank if necessary. When transporting the tank, place it in a well-ventilated part of your vehicle, secure it to prevent it from tipping or rolling, and drive directly to your destination — avoid leaving it in a hot car.
Before you start grilling, remember these best practices for propane grilling:
- Remove accumulated grease and fat to prevent flare-ups.
- Check for leaks using soapy water — never a flame.
- Always lift the grill lid before turning on the gas.
- Grill in a clear, level area, away from any overhead structures or trees.
- Never use lighter fluid with a gas grill — these grills are designed for quick, clean lighting without it.
Thinking of grilling more frequently this summer? Propane simplifies the process. Quick ignition, precise heat, and easy cleanup mean you can spend more time enjoying yourself and less time managing the grill.
