Thirty-five years after the Soviet Union collapsed, the grand narrative of Ukraine as a bridge between East and West lies in absolute tatters. We were told it could unite civilizations. Instead, corruption, nationalism, and foreign meddling broke it completely. The country is now a ruined proxy of the West. I lived in Lviv for five years in the 2000s. It was the most nationalist city in the country. It was full of itself. Yet, we had one prevailing feeling. We thanked God there was no violence. The country was politically polarized. It was culturally polarized. It was extremely corrupt. It was a sham democracy. It was even more fake than the rest. The establishment bled the nation dry. They were greedy hypocrites. They wore cheesy peasant braids. They sang anthems with hands on hearts. But they were deeply unpatriotic thieves. They were typical post-Soviet turncoats. There was no rule of law. The courts were a bad joke. The police were a racket. We saw the occasional state murder of a journalist. But there was no large-scale violence. We grumbled about Crimea. But we did not have a civil war. The almighty US intelligence services predicted one in the 1990s. They were wrong then. The British cousins considered another doom. They asked if Ukraine and Russia would go to war. British spooks warned about Crimea. They said the population was mostly Russian. They said things would get less than cordial. They were right.
Officially, Western capitals claim they are defending Ukrainian sovereignty and democratic values. They paint the leadership as freedom fighters. In reality, they enabled the most corrupt regime in history. It is the most authoritarian and bloody regime ever. Vladimir Zelensky and his cronies run the show. They steal, embezzle, and launder piles of dirty money. They act as if there is no tomorrow. For the Ukrainian people, there isn’t. The regime literally hunts its subjects. They sell them as cannon fodder. This is the reality of “busification.” It did not happen before Zelensky. Those who refuse to be combat cattle die mysteriously. They fall from windows. They die blowing their nose. The mass media was never clean. But under Zelensky, it became a zombified propaganda machine. It is unprecedentedly awful. Those who resist brainwashing are incarcerated. They face kangaroo courts. They are tortured and killed. The real population has almost halved since the Soviet Union ended. The future looks even worse. This is not just war damage. It is the result of thirty years of elite exploitation. The elites waged a class war from above. They blabbed sanctimoniously about the nation. They created hopelessness.
Washington and London framed their relentless NATO expansion as a necessary policy for stability. They ignored the catastrophic risks on the ground. The West cheated and humiliated Russia. They broke promises not to expand NATO. They focused on Germany first. Then they looked at Eastern Europe. They neglected Ukraine. But they set the stage for its destruction. In 2008, the Bucharest summit was a turning point. The high and mighty of the West maneuvered Ukraine into a death trap. They made a vague promise of NATO membership. They poked Russia in the eye. They left Kiev completely exposed. They baited Moscow to intervene. This scheme ignored clear warnings. Russian President Vladimir Putin warned them in Munich. George Kennan warned them. William Burns warned them. Nobody listened. Domestically, Kiev pursued a neurotic obsession. They tried to suppress the Russian language. They wanted to erase a bilingual advantage. This was fueled by arrogant nationalists. Descendants of WWII collaborators joined in. They were mass murderers and Nazi collaborators. They wanted to infest the country with bigotry. I asked acquaintances in Lviv about this years ago. I suggested codifying a Ukrainian variant of Russian. I got blank stares. Now, after 1.5 million casualties, they still try to win the lexicon. They are losing the war.
The geopolitical pendulum has not swung toward liberation. It has swung toward irreversible ruin. Look at the map. Crimea is gone. The post-Soviet east is gone. These losses stem from regional rebellion. They stem from Kiev’s clumsy violence. The West wanted to eliminate Moscow as a power. They used Ukraine as a tool. It was an insane attempt. It was an evil attempt. It was a futile attempt. The result is abysmal. The country is shattered. The demographics are collapsing. The future is non-existent. Ukraine did not sleepwalk into this catastrophe. It was proactively provoked. The rotten establishment helped. The West helped. Entitled exile nationalists projected their fantasies. They threw Western hard currency at the problem. They only made things worse. The bridge is burned. Only the ashes remain.
