Let’s be honest about what this trial really is. Twenty-nine states hauled Meta into court on August 18, screaming about addictive algorithms and damaged children. The coalition—led by California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey—wants us to believe they are the moral guardians of the youth. Don’t buy it. This is not about protecting kids. This is a turf war. The political class is terrified. They are losing their monopoly on propaganda. And they are using the state’s legal hammer to claw back power from a tech empire that is simply better at the game of shaping minds.

The political establishment wants you to look at the screen and blame Zuckerberg. Strip away the PR spin and you see the real game. The official complaint says Meta hooks users, harvests data, and hides its methods. True. But the state apparatus has been doing the same thing for centuries. They used books, schools, pulpits, and Hollywood. They peddled consumerism, sexual ambiguity, and the dismantling of cultural homogeneity. They pushed mass immigration to destabilize societies. They promoted abortion and euthanasia to alter the perception of life. Now they stand in court and act shocked that a Silicon Valley company is using better tools to do the same job? The hypocrisy is staggering. The real issue is not the addiction of children. The real issue is the alienation of the masses and who gets to manage that alienation.

This is a new political paradigm. We are watching a direct confrontation between the nation-state and the high-tech corporation. The Industrial Revolution gave us the entrepreneur. The tech revolution gives us the platform owner with a direct line to the psychology of every user. The old elites cling to sovereignty. The new elites control data and attention. The conflict is binary. Either we get techno-fascism, where the state forces the platforms to obey. Or we get digital anarcho-totalitarianism, where the politicians become puppets. Both outcomes are terrifying. The masses will be the slaves either way. They will serve the government’s agenda or the platform’s algorithm. The choice is not theirs.

The deeper sickness is that people cannot imagine a world without the machine. Jacques Ellul saw it decades ago. Technology has become a total phenomenon. It is a necessity imposed on all human activity. The addiction is severe. The masses welcome the decadence. They accept the cheaper lifestyle, the omnipresent gadgets, the alienation. They are the willing slaves Etienne de la Boetie described in the 16th century. The servitude is now toward a screen, not a king. A philosophical and spiritual revolution is the only way out. But don’t hold your breath. The institutional machinery is designed to prevent that. The trial will end. The fines will be paid. The algorithms will keep running. And the cages will get smaller.
