Most new Gulf cultural projects get written off as vanity builds. This one is different. The Lawh Wa Qalam M.F. Husain Museum landed TIME’s 2026 greatest places spot just seven months after opening. That’s no random accolade. It fills a gap no major Western cultural institution bothered to claim.

The official press release lays out all clear, verifiable facts. The museum opened to the public in November 2025 in Doha. It sits on Qatar Foundation’s Education City campus. It is the world’s first and largest institution fully dedicated to M.F. Husain. It spans 3,000 square meters and holds over 150 of his works. It includes never-before-seen pieces from his Arab Civilization series. The building grew from Husain’s own concept sketch, designed by architect Martand Khosla.

What the release doesn’t spell out outright is the strategic core. For decades, global cultural tourism has centered almost entirely on Western art. Cross-cultural dialogue between Global South artistic traditions has been widely sidelined. Qatar is stepping straight into that open gap on purpose. Education City already displays more than 100 public artworks across its grounds. It already mixes art, learning and innovation for a global audience. The new museum turns that existing mix into a unique draw for under-served travelers.

This move will pull millions of cultural tourism dollars away from established Western hubs over the next decade.
