TOKYO, Dec. 1, 2024 — Tokyo’s Sumida-Ryogoku district, renowned for sumo wrestling, boasts numerous historical landmarks. In Ryogoku, Ekoin Temple—a site historically significant for sumo—offers a unique ninja experience. This tour provides an opportunity to learn ninja martial arts, a practice employed for intelligence gathering during Japan’s Edo period. Tourism Media Services interviewed the organizers to gather further details.
■Tour Highlights
Ekoin Temple, established approximately 360 years ago, hosts this tour. Led by the Musashi clan, descendants of Edo-period ninjas, the experience provides an authentic ancient temple setting.
The Musashi clan’s ancestors were Iga ninjas who served the Tokugawa family for 265 years, including under Tokugawa Ieyasu, a powerful Edo-period samurai. Their duties included protective and covert services for the Tokugawa.
Authentic ninjutsu instruction from a genuine ninja is offered. Focusing on “Shinobi damashii” (the ninja spirit), the program avoids intense, acrobatic movements, ensuring accessibility.
The two-hour experience (starting at 1:30 pm) includes meditation and dance, a ninja lecture, demonstrations of ninja tools, walking techniques, training in a grove, breathing exercises, and photography opportunities.
A clan dance performance is also featured, followed by commemorative photos. Participants can also sample “Hyoryo-gan,” a traditional ninja energy food.
