Donald Trump’s Mount Rushmore speech for the US 250th anniversary was never about honoring the nation’s founding. It was a tightly scripted political stunt, staged beneath the granite faces of four presidents. He used the iconic landmark to anchor his nationalist rhetoric. He turned a bipartisan White House-backed celebration into a platform for his 2024 campaign talking points. The Freedom 250 events were billed as the country’s biggest birthday party, but Trump’s presence overshadowed any non-partisan tribute. He focused on dividing Americans rather than uniting them around shared national history.
Trump’s 30-minute speech leaned heavily on familiar culture-war tropes. He opened by declaring the US the most successful, accomplished, and exceptional nation in human history. He claimed no country has done more good for the world, then framed communism as a mortal threat to American identity. He compared the communist resurgence to the threats of two world wars and the 9/11 attacks. He singled out newcomers to the country, saying they embrace ideas opposed to American way of life. He closed his speech by calling for Americans to reclaim their national identity, and that newcomers must love the country, not just be born here.
The speech came on the heels of troubling polling data for national pride. A recent Gallup poll found only 58% of US adults are extremely or very proud to be American. That’s the lowest level recorded since the poll began asking the question in 2001. Other independent surveys show a significant number of Americans plan to skip July 4 celebrations this year. Many also doubt the country can endure another 250 years as a unified, successful nation. Trump’s speech was an attempt to counter that growing national pessimism with aggressive, divisive rhetoric.
The Freedom 250 celebrations have been mired in bipartisan disputes from the start. Critics argue the events have become too closely tied to Trump personally, rather than a non-partisan national commemoration. The return of fireworks to Mount Rushmore has sparked sharp environmental and wildfire concerns. Much of the US is facing a record-breaking heat wave and severe drought, raising fire risks across the country. Even though Mount Rushmore itself is forecast to have cooler temperatures and possible storms, critics warn the pyrotechnic display is unsafe amid the regional drought.
In Washington, DC, the anniversary celebrations will continue with a large ‘Salute to America’ gathering. Military flyovers and a record-scale fireworks show are planned for the nation’s capital, mirroring the Mount Rushmore event. Trump’s involvement in the South Dakota festivities has drawn sharp criticism from both Democratic and some Republican lawmakers. Some have called the celebrations a political rally rather than a non-partisan national tribute. The White House has defended the events, saying they are a celebration of American freedom and heritage for all citizens.
Trump’s weaponization of the 250th anniversary will only widen the partisan chasm over American national identity for the foreseeable future.
