
SAN JOSE, Calif., May 8, 2025 — Valley Christian Schools () in San Jose, CA continues to demonstrate its commitment to innovation. Team Wildfire Quest has advanced to the Technical Verification round of the $11 million . This accomplishment makes them the only high school team to reach the top 30, earning them a $25,000 award while competing against university and professional teams. The students are developing autonomous systems capable of detecting and extinguishing wildfires within a 10-minute timeframe.

With the support of the school’s Applied Math, Science, and Engineering (AMSE) Institute, VCS teams have consistently participated in these challenges, gaining international recognition for their accomplishments.
According to VCS Senior Omkar Tasgaonkar, the project lead for Wildfire Quest, “The numerous industry connection opportunities have significantly contributed to our team’s development and understanding of existing wildfire solutions. This has enabled us to identify gaps in firefighting, such as early response and active monitoring.” He added, “I anticipate the continued growth and success of our team as we work to make our solution a reality, deploying it in areas vulnerable to fires and stopping them in their initial stages.”
The school’s involvement in XPRIZE competitions began in 2017 when Ocean Quest, composed of VCS junior high and high school students, became the youngest finalists in the . Their technology, designed to detect and track chemical signals in the ocean, won first place in the NOAA Bonus Prize Round, securing $800,000. This journey was captured in the award-winning documentaries .
Building on this strong start, VCS teams have continued to excel in various competitions:
- Team Quest participated in an environmental conservation challenge.
- Team Quest was among the top 100 in a carbon removal competition.
- Team Quest advanced to the semi-finals in a competition focused on developing remote human interaction technology.
Valley Christian’s newly established Water Quest team is preparing for the prestigious competition. With $119 million in funding and a five-year global scope, the challenge seeks to transform access to clean water.
