Illegal meat products seized at Bredco Port

ABOUT P154,000 worth of pork and beef products were intercepted by the African Swine Fever (ASF) Task Force of Negros Occidental at the Bredco Port in Bacolod City around 9 a.m. Sunday, March 6.Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena said among the items seized were 121 kilograms of pork tapa, 431 kilograms of longaniza, 153 grams of tocino and 100 kilograms of beef tapa.Decena said these products were illegally shipped to the province through the Caticlan port in Aklan and Dumangas Port in Iloilo from Batangas.Currently, meat products from Batangas are barred from entering Negros Occidental amid the threat of ASF, he said, adding that the intercepted items will be shipped back to their origin. The province, which has a P6-billion hog industry, earlier banned the entry of pigs, pork, and other pork products from Luzon, Mindanao, and Eastern Visayas following the ASF outbreaks in these areas considered as “red zones.”The provincial veterinarian said about 85 percent of the swine producers in the province comprised about 15,000 backyard raisers who are now earning P160 per kilo on their live weight pork.Negros Occidental remains ASF free, he said.
