Actress dies after ingesting frog venom in spiritual ceremony

Mexican actress Marcela Alcázar Rodríguez, 33, passed away after participating in a spiritual cleansing ceremony where she ingested the venom of a poisonous Amazonian frog.

Local reports indicate Rodríguez ingested the poison as part of a ritual used by some South American indigenous communities for detoxification.

Following ingestion, Rodríguez experienced vomiting and severe diarrhea.

Initially refusing assistance, she later accepted help when her condition deteriorated after a friend’s visit, according to witnesses.

Mapache Films, her production company, released a statement mourning the loss of their “beloved colleague and friend.”

“With deep regret, we mourn the death of our beloved colleague and friend, Marcela Alcázar Rodríguez,” the production company stated in a tribute.

“Her passing leaves a profound void in our hearts and within our professional community. Her dedication, joy, and commitment have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of working alongside her.”

According to Healthline, Kambo is a healing ritual employing the poisonous secretions of a frog.

“The frog secretes this substance as a defense mechanism to kill or incapacitate predators. However, some people apply it to their bodies for purported health benefits,” the outlet explains.

Authorities are investigating the shaman’s role in the incident.
