Air India Crash Sole Survivor Credits ‘Miracle’ for Survival

Viswashkumar Ramesh, the only person to survive the plane crash that occurred shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on Thursday, told DD India that his survival was a “miracle.”

“I can’t explain it,” he stated.

Air India reported on X that the Boeing 787-8 was headed to London Gatwick Airport. The airline confirmed “241 fatalities” out of the 242 people on board.

The airline’s post mentioned that the survivor “is a British national of Indian origin,” though his name was not specified.

“When I woke up, there were bodies surrounding me. I was frightened,” Ramesh recounted to DD News, according to the news source.

Ramesh told DD News that he “witnessed people dying,” reports indicate.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Ramesh following the devastating crash.

“Air India expresses its profound sympathy to the families of those who died. Our current priority is to address the needs of all those impacted, including their families and loved ones,” the airline stated in its X post.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the passengers and crew of Air India Flight 171, as well as all those affected in Ahmedabad,” President and CEO Kelly Ortberg said in a statement.

“I have spoken with Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran to offer our full support, and a Boeing team is prepared to assist the investigation being conducted by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau,” he added.
