Australian bystander disarms suspected shooter in Hanukkah attack in Australia

Distressing footage from the Hanukkah shooting in Sydney, Australia, captures a bystander taking down and disarming one of the gunmen on Sunday.

The footage shows the bystander creeping up on the shooter while he fires at off-screen victims. The man then tackles the shooter and pries the gun from his grasp. He subsequently aims the weapon at the shooter but does not fire.

Australian media have identified the hero as 43-year-old Ahmed al-Ahmad. His cousin, Mustafa al-Ahmad, told Australia’s News 7 that Ahmed was shot once in the arm and once in the shoulder—wounds inflicted when the second gunman opened fire on him after he tackled the first attacker.

“He’s a hero—100 percent a hero. Once we saw it on social media, he’s absolutely a hero,” Mustafa told the outlet.

Ahmed is currently undergoing surgery and is expected to make a full recovery, Australian media reports.

As footage of his intervention spread, praise and gratitude flooded social media for Ahmed.

Israeli Prime Minister praised the man as “brave” in a statement about the shooting. Netanyahu had initially claimed the intervening man was Jewish, but that was before al-Ahmad’s identity was revealed.

“We witnessed the act of a brave man—turns out a brave Muslim man—and I salute him—who stopped one of these terrorists from killing innocent Jews,” Netanyahu said.

Chris Minns, premier of Australia’s New South Wales, also hailed al-Ahmad as a hero.

“That man is a genuine hero, and I have no doubt countless people are alive tonight because of his bravery,” Minns said in a statement.

At least 11 people were killed and 28 hospitalized. One gunman died, and the other remains in critical condition.

Australian authorities confirmed the attack targeted the Jewish community, which was celebrating the first day of Hanukkah on Bondi Beach.

Neither shooter has been identified.
