During a pre-G20 event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s first lady, Janja Lula da Silva, made a pointed remark directed at Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
While speaking about misinformation on social media, she paused upon hearing a ship’s horn, jokingly attributing it to Musk. She then stated, in both Portuguese and English, her defiance of him, using an expletive in the English version. This prompted cheers from the audience.
A video of the incident, shared on X (formerly Twitter), elicited a response from Musk, who reacted with laughter emojis and predicted a loss for the ruling party in the next election.
This incident follows a temporary ban on X in Brazil in September due to concerns about insufficient moderation of misinformation, a ban later lifted after X agreed to comply with Brazilian laws.
The first lady’s comment occurred two days before the G20 summit, where Musk was present but did not participate in the official photograph with other world leaders, a decision the White House attributed to logistical issues.
