Brescia Raid Nets 25, Including a Nun, in ‘Ndrangheta Mafia Crackdown

Italian authorities apprehended a nun renowned for her prison ministry and 24 others on Thursday during a crackdown on the ‘Ndrangheta mafia in Brescia. This was confirmed by three sources familiar with the investigation.

Sister Anna Donelli, a volunteer at Milan’s San Vittore prison, faces allegations of mafia association and acting as an intermediary for the criminal organization.

The 57-year-old nun is also recognized for her work in Milan’s disadvantaged areas. She was a recipient of the “Golden Panettone” civic award this past February.

Her legal counsel was unavailable for immediate comment.

A police announcement stated that two local politicians were also arrested, and €1.8 million ($1.89 million) was confiscated. The statement didn’t identify those detained.

Charges against the suspects include mafia association, vote buying, illegal weapons possession, money laundering, loan sharking, drug trafficking, and fraudulent invoicing, according to the police.

The alleged criminal group is linked to €12 million in false invoices, facilitating tax evasion for collaborating business owners in exchange for payments to mobsters.

Originating in Calabria, the ‘Ndrangheta has become Italy’s most dominant mafia group, with a global reach, extending its influence into white-collar crime.
