Coffin Believed to Hold Remains of One of Last Two Deceased Hostages Arrives in Israel

A coffin arrived in Israel on Wednesday, believed to hold the remains of one of the final two deceased hostages from Gaza.

“The deceased hostage’s coffin, accompanied by IDF soldiers, entered the State of Israel recently and is en route to the National Institute for Forensic Medicine for identification,” the military reported.

The coffin brought into Israel potentially contains the remains of either Ran Gvili or Sudthisak Rinthalak.

On October 7, 2023, Gvili was meant to be recuperating and awaiting shoulder surgery. Nevertheless, when the crisis began, Gvili, a member of a counter-terror unit, opted to intervene and rescue others. He fought with his colleagues and was ultimately slain near Kibbutz Alumim. His remains were transported into Gaza, where they have been kept for approximately 790 days.

“At the outset of this nightmare, 255 hostages were taken. Their families united as one large family. We supported each other through every agonizing moment. Each time someone returned, it felt like a part of us was restored. Now, only two remain in Gaza’s shadows. I am terrified that after so many have come home, my Ran will be forgotten. I cannot escape this overwhelming dread: when will it be our turn?” wrote Talik, Gvili’s mother, in an op-ed.

Rinthalak, a 43-year-old agricultural worker, was employed in Israel to provide for his family in Thailand when he perished during the October 7, 2023, assaults, and his body was moved to Gaza. His family informed the Israeli news outlet Ynet that he had planned to return home permanently once he had accumulated additional savings.

“Our last conversation took place approximately 10 days before October 7,” his family recalled. “We requested him to visit Thailand. We had not seen him in many years, since he began working in Israel. He mentioned his desire to save more funds before returning home permanently. Then October 7 occurred, and he was killed. I wish for my son to be home as quickly as possible. I await him daily.”

On Tuesday, Israel took possession of human remains that, following testing, were confirmed not to belong to either Gvili or Rinthalak, reports indicated. The news source reported that a high-ranking Red Cross official stated the evidence provided to the IDF comprised “small remains, pieces” of a body.
