Filipino mayor escapes unharmed from apparent RPG attack on car in broad daylight

A mayor escaped unharmed after an apparent rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) attack on his convoy in broad daylight Sunday in the southern province of Maguindanao del Sur, authorities said.

The Philippine News Agency (PNA), the country’s state-run news outlet, said Mayor Akmad Ampatuan was inside a bulletproof vehicle when the attack happened at around 6:30 a.m.

Video of the incident shows two men getting out of a white van—one holding something that looks like an RPG and the other with a gun.

One of the men then picks up the weapon and aims it down the street.

He fires it before jumping back into the van, just as a black SUV turns onto the road and is hit.

PNA reported the mayor’s backup vehicle, a pickup truck, was also hit by gunfire during the attack.

Authorities later killed three suspected attackers while chasing them.

The reason for the attack wasn’t known right away.

“The mayor is safe,” Anwar Kuit Emblawa, the mayor’s executive assistant, told PNA.

Two members of Ampatuan’s team were injured, but their wounds weren’t life-threatening.

The outlet said the mayor has survived two earlier assassination attempts in the past five years.
