Following a tense meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received a warm welcome from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer outside 10 Downing Street in London on Saturday.
Zelenskyy and Starmer, who had previously met with Trump on Thursday, greeted each other with an embrace, handshake, and a wave, also giving a thumbs up to reporters before entering the prime minister’s residence for their discussions.
The London visit was scheduled after Zelenskyy’s meeting with Trump and Vice President JD Vance in the Oval Office on Friday, which was televised.
Reporters questioned Zelenskyy intensely about Trump outside the prime minister’s residence, but he did not respond.
Starmer greeted Zelenskyy saying, “Let me extend a very warm welcome to you here at Downing Street. As the cheers from the street outside indicate, you have the full support of the United Kingdom, and we stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes.”
He continued, “I trust you heard the cheers from the street, reflecting the British people’s strong support for you and Ukraine. We are resolutely committed to achieving a lasting peace for Ukraine, based on sovereignty and security, which is vital for Ukraine, Europe, and the United Kingdom. I eagerly anticipate our discussions this afternoon. Thank you for your time.”
Zelenskyy responded, “With pleasure. Thank you very much.”
He also noted that the British people have provided “significant support to Ukraine from the beginning of this war.”
Zelenskyy expressed his excitement about meeting with King Charles III at Sandringham on Sunday.
During Friday’s Oval Office meeting, tensions rose over a potential peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, particularly after Zelenskyy expressed distrust of Russian President Vladimir Putin and cited previous breached agreements.
Trump and Vance then criticized Zelenskyy for a perceived lack of gratitude for U.S. support and suggested he was in a “weak negotiating position.”
“You’re gambling with the lives of millions and risking World War III,” Trump stated, adding that Zelenskyy’s actions were “disrespectful to this country.”
After Vance pointed out Ukraine’s challenges with manpower and military recruitment, Zelenskyy responded that war creates problems for everyone, including the U.S., which he said would feel the effects of the war “in the future.”
“Don’t presume to tell us what we’re going to feel,” Trump retorted. “We’re trying to find a solution. Don’t tell us what we’re going to feel.”
Following the exchange, Zelenskyy was asked to leave the White House, a scheduled press conference was canceled, and a deal involving Ukraine providing rare earth minerals to the U.S. was not signed.
Zelenskyy sought to emphasize the continued good relationship with the U.S. after the meeting.
“Thank you America, thank you for your support, thank you for this visit,” he posted on X. “Thank you @POTUS, Congress, and the American people. Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that.”
In an exclusive interview on “”, Zelenskyy told Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier that he believes Ukrainian-U.S. relations can be repaired.
“Yes, of course, because it’s relations more than two presidents,” he said in the exclusive interview. “It’s the historical relations, strong relations between our people. And that’s why I always began … to thank your people from our people.
“Of course, thankful to the president and, of course, to Congress,” Zelenskyy added, “But, first of all, to your people … we wanted very much to have all this strong relations and where it counted. We will have it.”
Zelenskyy stated he was “not sure we did something bad” regarding the heated exchange but acknowledged the disagreement was “bad for both sides.”
