As part of an ongoing ceasefire agreement, Hamas initiated a third phase of hostage releases in Gaza on Thursday.
Twenty-year-old Israeli soldier Agam Berger was handed over to the Red Cross by Hamas during a ceremony in Jabaliya, a heavily damaged refugee camp in northern Gaza. She was subsequently transferred to the Israel Defense Forces.
A second ceremony, held in front of the destroyed home of deceased Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in the southern city of Khan Younis, was also attended by numerous individuals, including masked militants and observers.
Hamas committed to releasing three Israeli and five Thai captives on Thursday. This exchange was contingent upon Israel releasing 110 Palestinian prisoners.
The truce aims to de-escalate the most severe and destructive conflict in the history of the Israeli-Hamas conflict, which began with Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. The ceasefire has persisted despite an earlier disagreement this week regarding the order of hostage releases.
