Gunman Killed, Three Jordanian Police Officers Wounded in Embassy Shootout

Three Jordanian police officers were injured in an exchange of gunfire with a gunman near the Israeli embassy in Amman early Sunday, resulting in the gunman’s death, according to authorities.

The Public Security Directorate reported that the shooting occurred in the Rabiah neighborhood. Following a pursuit, police engaged the gunman, fatally wounding him.

An official statement explained that the gunman, when cornered, fired upon security forces, prompting a response that led to his death.

Jordanian Communications Minister Mohamed Momani characterized the incident to Reuters as a terrorist attack targeting the nation’s security forces.

Momani emphasized the government’s firm response to threats against national security and personnel.

Although the gunman’s identity was not immediately released, Momani revealed a history of drug trafficking.

Authorities are currently investigating the incident.

Jordan, a close Western ally, established peace with Israel in 1994. However, tensions have risen recently due to the Israeli-Gaza conflict.

Given its substantial Palestinian population, Jordan has experienced recurring demonstrations near the Israeli Embassy, occasionally leading to clashes with police.
