Hegseth: US and Panama to Reassert Control Over Canal Amid Concerns of Chinese Influence

According to the Secretary of Defense on Tuesday, the U.S. intends to regain control of the Panama Canal, pushing back against what he described as “China’s influence,” as the U.S. seeks to reassert its dominance over this key trade artery.

During a press briefing in Panama, he stated that the U.S. will prevent communist China or any other nation from endangering the canal’s functionality or safety. He emphasized the recent collaborative efforts between the U.S. and Panama to bolster their defense and security cooperation.

He further stated that the U.S. and Panama will jointly reclaim the Panama Canal from Chinese influence.

Despite these claims, Panama has consistently refuted assertions from the Trump administration that China is effectively in control due to its operation of two major ports at either end of the canal.

However, Panama’s withdrawal from its 2017 Belt and Road Initiative agreements with Beijing earlier this year suggests a shift towards aligning with the Trump administration in this geopolitical rivalry.

Hegseth detailed various joint military exercises, operations, and the overall presence of the U.S. military in the canal area, aimed at countering China. While Digital has been unable to confirm with the Pentagon whether this represents an increased U.S. presence.

Hegseth stated that the security relationship with Panama will continue to strengthen in the future, partly to address the growing challenges posed by communist China.

The defense secretary also asserted that continue to install “critical infrastructure” in the canal, which China the “potential” ability to “conduct surveillance.”

He warned that this situation compromises the security, prosperity, and sovereignty of both Panama and the United States.

Hegseth emphasized that China did not construct, operate, or intend to weaponize the Panama Canal.

The Chinese embassy in D.C. has not yet responded to Digital’s request for comment.
