Israel announced the closure of its embassy in Ireland, citing the Irish government’s strongly anti-Israel policies as the reason for this action, effective in the coming weeks. This follows the recall of Israel’s ambassador from Dublin.
Gideon Saar stated that Ireland had crossed a critical threshold, specifically mentioning Ireland’s recognition of a Palestinian state as a key factor in the decision. Saar characterized Ireland’s actions and rhetoric as anti-Semitic, aiming to delegitimize and demonize Israel while applying double standards.
Saar further explained that Israel will prioritize its diplomatic resources, focusing on countries demonstrating supportive attitudes and actions toward Israel.
Ireland’s Prime Minister, Simon Harris, expressed deep regret over the decision, a sentiment echoed by Deputy Prime Minister Micheál Martin. Martin emphasized the importance of maintaining diplomatic communication and regretted Israel’s decision.
Martin reiterated Ireland’s commitment to international law and humanitarian law in its approach to the Middle East conflict.
This announcement coincides with Israel’s ongoing consideration of further strikes against Iran. Recent reports suggest that escalating tensions between the West and nations such as Russia and Iran, coupled with concerns over Iran’s nuclear program, have led to renewed Israeli consideration of military action.
The U.S., alongside international partners including the International Atomic Energy Agency, has expressed concerns about Iran’s nuclear program.
Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed a strike targeting a part of Iran’s nuclear program in October. He cautioned that this action was insufficient to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
