Peter Fitzek, a self-proclaimed “king of Germany,” and three of his high-ranking followers have been arrested for allegedly attempting to overthrow the German government, according to media reports.
Fitzek, 59, was apprehended during police raids conducted on Tuesday across seven German states, the BBC reported.
Fitzek’s organization, Reichsbürger, meaning “citizens of the Reich,” has been outlawed by the German government.
The group seeks to establish the Königreich Deutschland, or “Kingdom of Germany.”
“I am not interested in being a part of this fascist and satanic system,” Fitzek stated in a 2022 interview.
The Reichsbürger reportedly maintains its own currency, flag, and identification cards and aims to establish independent banking and healthcare systems.
Germany’s interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt, stated that the Reichsbürger undermines “the rule of law” by forming an alternative state and disseminating “antisemitic conspiracy narratives to support their alleged claim to authority,” the news report noted.
He added that the group funds itself.
Fitzek, who claims to have thousands of “subjects,” denied any violent intentions but also described Germany as “destructive and sick.”
In 2022, numerous individuals associated with the Reichsbürger were arrested for plotting to overthrow the German government in Berlin. They were accused of planning a violent coup, which included kidnapping the health minister to create “civil war conditions” in an effort to topple German democracy, .
Once dismissed as eccentric, the group is now viewed within Germany as a as the far right has gained political influence over the past decade, the report said.
