Ibrahim Mrad, head of the Universal Syriac Union Party and the Lebanese Christian Front, is urging the U.S., U.K., and Germany to intervene militarily alongside the UN and Lebanese army to permanently dismantle Hezbollah.
Mrad contends that timely intervention is crucial; otherwise, Iran’s influence will strengthen, making Hezbollah’s dismantling impossible.
While Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz recently declared Hezbollah’s defeat following targeted strikes, a fragile ceasefire has since been implemented, though sporadic attacks continue.
However, recent reports suggest that Hezbollah, despite the strikes, continues its military operations and recruitment, and is attempting to rearm, raising concerns about the ceasefire’s sustainability.
Mrad’s Christian Front anticipates the ceasefire’s failure and calls on Lebanese parliamentarians to request international troop deployment.
Mrad estimates that 70% of Lebanon opposes Hezbollah, but believes the Lebanese army lacks the strength to disarm the group, necessitating international intervention to enforce past UN resolutions (1559 and 1701) which aimed to disarm militias and prevent Hezbollah’s expansion.
Mrad advocates for the inclusion of U.S., German, and British forces in any UN deployment.
The State Department hasn’t yet commented on whether Lebanon has formally requested U.S. troop deployment.
Concerns about the ceasefire’s collapse are amplified by Israel’s renewed threats of action should Hezbollah violate the agreement.
Mrad cautions against targeting civilians, believing such actions would turn public opinion against Israel, a shift he deems undesirable considering the existing anti-Hezbollah sentiment among the Lebanese population.
