The Global Terrorism Index (GTI) has found a rise in lone wolf terrorist attacks in the West during 2024, coinciding with a global increase in terrorism.
The GTI’s 2025 report, released Wednesday, indicated that the number of countries experiencing conflict rose to 66 last year, up from 58 in 2023. This reverses almost a decade of progress, according to the GTI.
In Western nations, lone wolf terrorists were responsible for 93% of all deadly attacks.
The GTI report stated that “Most attacks in the West are now carried out by individuals who are not formally affiliated with any group, and who become radicalized through social media, gaming platforms, and encrypted messaging apps.”
The report further explained, “The move toward online radicalization has given potential terrorists access to extremist material and allowed them to organize with very little physical interaction. Algorithmic radicalization on common social media platforms can lead users to increasingly extreme content.”
The release of the report coincided with the arrest of a suspect by U.S. authorities. The Justice Department claims the suspect admitted to scouting the route used in the 2021 attack, which resulted in the deaths of 13 service members.
Mohammad Sharifullah, an alleged member of ISIS-K, made his initial federal court appearance in Virginia on Wednesday. He is charged with providing and conspiring to provide material support and resources to a designated terrorist organization, resulting in death.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that Sharifullah was extradited to the U.S. on Tuesday night to “face American justice.”
Patel added on X, “3 and 1/2 years later, justice for our 13.”
President announced Sharifullah’s capture during his State of the Union address on Tuesday night, saying he was “pleased to announce that we have just apprehended the top terrorist responsible for that atrocity.”
