Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi Freed for Medical Care

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been temporarily released from Evin prison in Tehran to receive medical care, her husband, Taqi Rahmani, confirmed to Reuters on Wednesday. The release follows a three-week suspension of her sentence, granted based on a medical assessment.

Mohammadi is serving multiple sentences for charges including propagating against the Iranian government.

Her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, announced on X that the Tehran Prosecutor’s office suspended Mohammadi’s imprisonment due to her post-operative recovery. This follows recent surgery to remove a benign tumor and bone grafting, performed 21 days prior. Ongoing monitoring is required, with checkups scheduled every three months.

Mohammadi received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her three-decade-long advocacy for women’s rights and the elimination of capital punishment.

The chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee expressed deep concern for Mohammadi’s well-being, urging Iranian authorities to end her imprisonment and guarantee appropriate medical attention.

Joergen Watne Frydnes issued a statement calling for her unconditional release and access to adequate healthcare.
