Oregon, the nation’s leading Christmas tree producer, harvests approximately 4 million trees annually, representing about 33% of the U.S. total, generating around $120 million in revenue. This significant production is largely attributed to Holiday Tree Farms, widely considered the world’s largest Christmas tree farm.
Established in 1955 by the Schudel family, Holiday Tree Farms cultivates over 8,500 acres and harvests 1 million trees yearly. The farm employs roughly 600 workers across 12 processing yards during harvest season. While they grow several varieties, the Douglas fir is their most popular tree, sold domestically and internationally to Mexico, Guam, Asia, Central America, and other regions.
Besides Douglas fir, Holiday Tree Farms also produces Grand fir, Noble fir, and Nordmann fir trees. North Carolina follows Oregon in production, harvesting approximately 4 million trees annually, generating around $86 million in revenue.
The National Christmas Tree Association estimates annual U.S. sales of 25 to 30 million real Christmas trees from a total of about 350 million trees grown nationwide. Growing a six- to seven-foot tree takes seven to fifteen years. Each spring, farmers replant one to three seedlings for every tree harvested the previous fall.
