Palestinian Protesters Disrupt Israeli Basketball Game

During a FIBA Basketball Champions League game between Israel’s Hapoel Holon and France’s Nanterre 92, a disruption occurred when several protesters carrying Palestinian flags rushed onto the court, causing a disturbance among spectators.

This incident took place in the third quarter of the match and provoked strong reactions from the many French Jewish spectators supporting the Israeli team.

Approximately ten individuals ran onto the playing area, waving Palestinian flags. Some of the protesters entered the stands before security personnel intervened and apprehended them. Simultaneously, pro-Israel supporters began chanting nationalist slogans.

Following the detention of the protesters, the game resumed after a brief interruption. Enhanced security measures, including the deployment of officers with riot shields, were implemented to separate supporters of the Jewish community from other fans for the remainder of the game.

Earlier that day, the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs had issued a warning about potential protests near the arena, mentioning groups such as Europalestine and La France Insoumise as likely participants.

Earlier in the week, Nanterre Mayor Raphaël Adam had attempted to ban spectators from the game to prevent disorder, but a court reversed this decision on Wednesday morning.

Nanterre 92 defeated Hapoel Holon 87-77. Despite the loss, Hapoel Holon progressed to the Top 16 stage due to Igokea’s defeat by Würzburg. Yotam Hanochi led the scoring for Hapoel Holon with 18 points, while Paul Lacombe topped the scoring for Nanterre with 23 points.
