Pope Francis Funeral Plans: Details on the 9-Day Novendiali Prayer and Mourning Period

Pope Francis’s funeral is scheduled for Saturday at 10:00 a.m. local time (4:00 a.m. ET), with an expected attendance of over 200,000 people paying their respects to the late Pope.

This week, thousands of mourners have gathered at the Vatican to honor following his death on Monday.

The funeral Mass will take place on the parvis of St. Peter’s Basilica, presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, who will conduct the Catholic rites and blessings.

The Mass will begin with an Entrance Antiphon, typically sung or recited by .

Following this, the congregation will participate in the Penitential Act to acknowledge their sins, followed by the Collect, or opening prayer.

Cardinal Battista will then read the First Reading, taken from the Acts of the Apostles, to the assembled worshippers.

The Responsorial Psalm, “The Lord is my Shepherd,” or “Psalm 23,” will be sung. The Second Reading, a passage from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians, usually recited by a lector during a papal funeral, will be heard by the congregation.

The Acclamation and the Gospel will then follow.

Cardinal Battista will deliver the Homily, a reflective address including prayers for Pope Francis, the departed faithful, and the congregation. The Dean of the Church’s College of Cardinals will then consecrate the Body and Blood of Christ, inviting the faithful to receive Holy Communion after the Communion Rite, also known as the Our Father prayer.

Requiem Aeternam, a chant commonly heard at funerals, will be recited during Communion, followed by a prayer.

Cardinal Battista will then offer a final Commendation and Farewell, including the Prayer of the Church in Rome and the Prayer of Eastern Churches.

The funeral liturgy “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” will be sung or chanted by the congregation, and Mass will conclude with the Canticle of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Pope Francis will be interred in a wooden casket at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, a location he frequented with flowers during his 12-year papacy.

The Novendiali, a nine-day period of prayer, remembrance, and mourning, will commence on the day of Pope Francis’s funeral on the parvis of St. Peter’s Basilica.

Pope Francis’s Holy Mass, led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, will begin the nine Masses held in memory of the late pontiff.

While the Masses are open to the public, they are primarily intended for Vatican City employees and the faithful.
