Pope’s Condition Stable as He Enters Third Week in Hospital, Vatican Says

The Vatican reported Saturday that the Pope’s condition remains stable. The 88-year-old is alternating between mechanical ventilation and high-flow oxygen therapy and has not experienced a fever or further bronchospasms.

Sources within the Vatican describe the Pope’s situation as “complex” yet “stable” as he begins his third week at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. Reportedly, his white blood cell count is “so low” that infections are unlikely to be a concern, according to these sources.

The Pope is reportedly in good spirits and able to move around, eat, and walk. However, Vatican sources indicate that his doctors are advising caution. He chose to rest on Saturday rather than work with his secretaries, according to these sources.

Pope Francis was hospitalized on Feb. 14 initially believed to be for bronchitis. He was later diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia, affecting both lungs.

The 88-year-old has a history of respiratory issues, including the removal of part of his lung at the age of 21.

Catholics worldwide have been praying for the Pope’s recovery, with many gathering near the hospital where he is being treated.

During the annual National Prayer Breakfast on Friday, spoke of the Pope’s health challenges and mentioned that he has been praying daily for him since his hospitalization was announced.

The vice president acknowledged past disagreements between the Pope and the Trump administration, but emphasized the importance of praying for Pope Francis, leading the attendees in prayer.

“I believe that the pope is fundamentally a person who cares about the flock of Christians under his leadership, and he’s a man who cares about the spiritual direction of the faith,” Vance said. “Every day me and my children have said a prayer for the Holy Father, and we pray for his health, and we pray for his comfort as he deals with what appears to be a pretty serious health crisis.”

“If the Holy Father can hear us, I hope he knows that there are thousands of faithful Catholics in this room and millions of faithful Catholics in this country who are praying for him as he weathers his particular storm,” the vice president concluded.
